The beneficial impact of radio occultation observations on Australian region forecasts

چکیده
The radio occultation (RO) technique, employing the GPS constellation of satellites and radio receivers in low earth orbit, can provide valuable atmospheric profile information (Ware et al. 1996; Kursinski et al. 1996; Rocken et al. 1997; Wickert et al. 2001). The radio occultation technique has been long used in the study of planetary atmospheres (e.g. Fjeldbo et al. 1971) where it has provided much valuable information. The radio occultation technique is based on measuring the bending of radio waves by refractive index gradients in the atmosphere. By observing this bending, a vertical profile of bending angle or refractive index can be derived and subsequently a profile of temperature/moisture. In the datasparse southern hemisphere, observations of this type are vital for analysis, forecasting and climate monitoring. These data have recently been employed in some analysis centres around the globe where they have been shown to improve operational global numerical weather prediction (e.g. Cucurull and Derber 2008; Cucurull et al. 2007, 2008). Here we describe the use of COSMIC/FORMOSAT-3 Mission (Anthes et al. 2008), MetOp and GRACE radio occultation data in the ACCESS-G forecast system at the Bureau of Meteorology. Impact of CHAMP Radio Occultation Observations on Global Analysis and Forecasts in the Absence of AMSU Radiance Data
Challenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) radio occultation (RO) observations during a two-week period are assimilated into global analyses using the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) three-dimensional variational (3D-Var) system with a recently improved observation operator for assimilating GPS bending angle data. The NCEP 3D-Var system used in this research is suboptimal sin...

The GPS radio occultation (RO) technique [1] produces measurements in the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere [2] that contribute to monitoring space weather and climate change; and improving operational weather prediction. The high accuracy of RO soundings, traceable to SI standards, makes them ideal climate benchmark observations. For weather applications, RO observations improve the accuracy o...

This study presents a novel approach to estimating the intensity of hurricanes using temperature profiles from Global Positioning System radio occultation (GPSRO) measurements. Previous research has shown that the temperature difference between the ocean surface and the eyewall outflow region defines hurricanes’ thermodynamic efficiency, which is directly proportional to the storm’s intensity. ...

[1] We present the Radio Occultation Scintillation Simulator (ROSS), which uses the multiple phase screen method (MPS) to simulate the forward scatter of radio waves by irregularities in the equatorial ionosphere during radio occultation experiments. ROSS simulates propagation through equatorial plasma bubbles which are modeled as homogeneous electron density fluctuations modulated by a Chapman...

A major challenge for operational numerical weather prediction over the Antarctic and Southern Ocean is the lack of traditional meteorological observations. This increases uncertainty in the model initial condition and results in inferior forecast skills as compared with numerical weather prediction in mid-latitudes over the Northern Hemisphere. With the lack of traditional observations over th...
